The Man in Bronze

That man who stands so tall and proud,
the statue in the square,
the hero in the light of day,
with hard set jaw and windblown hair,

has stared alone at vacant streets,
has one time lost a fight.
His stoney visage thinks of sorrowful defeats,
sometimes he cries at night.

The fog lays heavy on the dampened avenue,
no passers-by salute his victories,
the raindrops fall upon his darkened brow,
pressing in around his happy memories.

But thru that mist, he hears the heroes call,
the voices in his hard cast heart arise.
It's then his silent strength unsung,
burns bright like fire in coal black eyes.

The metal of his soul resolves,
to grasp the days of righteous deeds he's done,
it is there, in the rain, alone with the moon,
his private battle’s won.

His vigil calls him up, his steely heart, his marble stage.
This hero cleaves the crest of inner fears,
to find the victories beyond.
The trumpet calls. An angel's voice he hears.

As he remounts the tired pedestal of life,
he knows that in the end, in darkest night,
he'll hear another's footsteps on the cobblestones,
emerging from the halo of a dim streetlight.

He'll hear the voice of truth and glory.
He'll feel a touch, forever tender, sweet and warm.
When memories of his name are lost in history,
still, he'll find his hero's welcome in his one true lovers arms.

Peace and Love, DaVinci
