Mother and Child

A mother’s love is at the core,
of heart and feeling, root and branch,
From blessed birth our kingdom’s doors,
set forth upon her countenance.

From first short breath, first sharp, instinctive cry,
Through life’s long road, with friends and foes,
Through days of sun and snow, until the day they die,
A mother gives her love in ways a child only knows.

Each offspring holds to one true fate,
A bond so pure, so deep it’s like no other,
More sure than lover, friend or mate,
The love between a child and mother.

This timeless bond, this faithful root of love,
Makes each small trespass, right or wrong,
Seem like a rustling in the willow grove,
Against a thunder, rolling, deep and strong.

When dark of night brings aching fears,
The loving mom will walk on water,
And turn the tide to brush a tear,
From the cheek of son or daughter.

Nobility beyond all measure,
In her arms all wounds are healed.
Sustaining and protecting each small treasure,
And in her eyes each truth will revealed.

Ever guiding, ever teaching,
A kind of love unknown by man.
Ever touching, a kind of reaching,
That, for a child, a mom can only understand.

If you could read a mother’s heart,
See past her raiments, foul or fair,
Look close, through all her life you’ll find,
Her children’s names are written there.

Written with Love, for all the mothers and children of our family.
