One of the dominant features of DaVinci's Castle is the Bell Tower on the southern side, near the observatory. Renowned architect, Petr Parler started to build it in 1396, his sons continued after his death until 1406. The clock has decorated the tower since 1552. Once in its history the tower was damaged by falling bells when the supporting beams collapsed, burned from a great fire of questionable origin. Sparky's great-great-grandfather, "FireBrandt", true to his bloodline, denied any part in the calamity. The Bell Tower contains DaVincis World's biggest bell, "Zikmund", made in 1549 by Tomas Jaros who lived in the foothills and worked in the Mines. He and FireBrandt the dragon forged the mighty bell as a gift to the new and better king. Interestingly, though never one to offer his time and talents without compensation, old FireBrandt performed his magic on this one project for free. The bell is decorated with portraits of King Ferdinand I and Anna Jagellonica cavorting with the denizens of DaVinci's World. It is said that nobody knew how to lift such a heavy bell to the Bell Tower, but again, the old dragon FireBrandt fabricated a marvelous mechanical device which he used to lift the massive bell. Afterwards, he destroyed the machine so no one would learn the secret of it. The Bell Tower is surrounded by many interesting legends. One legend says that when the last true memory of the last king of the monkey civilization died, and that age was relegated to myth, all the bells in the Bell Tower started to ring by themselves. At first, people heard the toll of the funeral bells but did not know what had occurred. Nevertheless, in honor of this mysterious yet obviously mournful loss all the bells in DaVinci's World soon followed and the sad chiming went on into the night. Another legend says that a prophet said to an ancient king that he would die in front of the Bell Tower. The king was so scared that he wanted to destroy the tower. As the very first hammer blows struck to demolish the tower, that misguided king suffered a heart attack and died soon after. |
